Nearly a decade ago, the launch of the first AsphaltQube system by IPC Global set a new benchmark in performance testing for asphalt mixtures.

As the first Controls unit built on the revolutionary Electromechanical Servoactuation Technology (EmS), its compact and modular design made advanced performance testing accessible beyond elite research laboratories.

Tests that were once confined to high-end facilities could now be carried out more broadly, effectively democratizing the evaluation of asphalt materials.

Electromechanical Servoactuation Technology has since gained widespread adoption across sectors such as industrial automation, robotics, aerospace, and precision manufacturing, driven by its superior accuracy, efficiency, and reliability.

Compared to traditional pneumatic and hydraulic systems, EmS offers far greater precision and controllability, enabling accurate management of position, velocity, and force through electric motors, sensors, and digital control systems. While hydraulics can deliver high force, they often lack fine positioning due to fluid-related limitations, and pneumatic systems suffer from non-linear behavior caused by air compressibility.

EmS also stands out for its energy efficiency, consuming power only during operation and eliminating the need for compressors or pumps, while reducing maintenance requirements thanks to fewer components and the absence of fluids.

Although hydraulic systems remain advantageous in extreme or high-force applications, EmS continues to expand its capabilities and has become the preferred solution for modern testing equipment. This is reflected in the CONTROLS range, where electromechanical motors are widely used, particularly in the advanced EmS dynamic actuator systems of AsphaltQube and AsphaltQube Pro.

AsphaltQube serves as a reference system for laboratories performing standard static and dynamic tests, including resilient modulus, fatigue cracking, and permanent deformation, in compliance with international standards. AsphaltQube Pro extends these capabilities with higher load capacity and a broader temperature range, enabling more advanced research applications such as low-temperature cracking and testing on granular materials.

Both systems are now widely used to support the development of innovative, high-performance pavement materials.

AsphaltQube and AsphaltQube Pro are used daily to develop innovative solutions and high-performance materials in pavement applications.

As example, Valli Zabban (Valli Zabban SpA: Panoramica | LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/valli-zabban-s-p-a-/) R&D laboratory in Bologna, Italy, daily uses AsphaltQube Pro to develop and validate asphalt mixes based on their advanced Polymer Modified Binders by a range of performance-based tests, including the evaluation of fracture energy.
