SuperPave™ (SUperior PERforming asphalt PAVEments) is a system that optimizes materials and mixture design of hot mix asphalt to meet specific paving project needs. It utilizes a system of specifications, test methods, testing equipment, and engineering best practices. 

It consists of three elements:

  1. An asphalt binder specification (“Performance Grading”) 
  2. A design and analysis system based on the volumetric properties of the asphalt mix (“Superpave™ Mix Design”)
  3. A mix performance prediction model has been the subject of intensive research for the last three decades but remains incomplete.

A Wide Range of Performance-based Tests

A variety of tests have been developed to accurately determine the performance of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and to indicate its resistance to rutting, fatigue cracking, and thermal cracking. 

However, researchers have not yet agreed on a universal test method as some of the existing ones are unable to recreate pavement performance in the field. 

Therefore, newer and more robust test methods are continually being researched to overcome the limitations of existing methods and provide pavement engineers with better testing options. You can find a detailed list with a brief explanation of each test method here.
